Every region in the country has its own set of delicacies that people associate with it when they see it. Whether it is a fruit or some baked goodies, these regional favorites often become “pasalubong” when people got to and from these areas. In this post, we will be talking about baked delicacies from Cebu.
Known locally as the Queen City of the South, Cebu City is in the middle of the island Cebu. This place was where Magellan landed and claimed the Philippines for Spain. This is also where the oldest street in the country can be found, and was the first capital of the country.
When it comes to visitors, Cebu has a lot due to the fact that not only is it a metropolis, but is also a popular resort destination. The island itself, and the surrounding islands around it, have numerous hotels and resorts where tourists as well as locals go to when they are looking for some sun, sand, and sea. When tourists go back home, they usually buy some of the more popular baked goodies that can only be called Cebu’s finest. Here are some of them:
Otap – this is a flaky and sweet biscuit that is one of the favorite take-home delicacies from Cebu. It is oval in shape and has sugar sprinkled on it. This is reminiscent of flaky, layered type pastries but instead of a rather soft texture, it is crispy. It can be somewhat messy to eat.
Torta – this baked delicacy comes from one of the towns south of the city and is essentially a small, cake-like product that resembles a rather large yet flat cupcake. This baked goodie from Argao Cebu has a rather crumbly yet moist consistency, making it a definite cross between a cupcake and a muffin. It is said that the best ones of this delicacy has some beer mixed into the batter, and this is what makes it distinctly different.
Rosquillos – another baked goodie from Cebu that people love to bring home with them is this flower shaped cookie. This flat and floral shaped snack can come in a variety of flavors, like chocolate and vanilla, but the vanilla one is the favorite. It has a hole in the middle, so kids love wearing these as rings that they slowly eat one by one from their fingers. Both this and Otap hail from Liloan, a town located somewhere in the northern parts of the island.
