BAKETECH HELPS IN GIVING SECOND CHANCES

295

Baketech believes that there is always good in human beings, and those who find themselves behind bars are no exception. This is why the company decide to hold a basic bread baking seminar in the Pampanga Provincial Jail, and had the inmates learn how to bake bread. This was done to show that they still have a chance at changing their lives for the better, and to do so, they should learn useful skills like bread baking.

On hand to facilitate the seminar is our very own Chef Jed, who was graceful enough to encourage the inmates to embrace the art of baking, and to consider a career in bread making should they find themselves back in society. It is never too late to change, and these inmates found out that with the right training and skills, you can turn away from a life of crime and into a life that is productive and honest. Hoping to give back to the community more in the coming weeks and months.

BAKETECH SOLUTIONS AND CHEF JED – CHAMPION FOR CHINESE NEW YEAR THEMED CAKE AT FCBAI

300

It was already a successful event for the staff and management of Baketech Solutions, what with the numerous inquiries and purchases made at the company’s FCBAI Bakery Fair booth. Everyone hustled to get the booth in proper order days before the event, and at the very last day, just when people were beginning to breathe a sigh of relief, what better way to cap the success of the event than with Chef Jed bagging the top honors for his impeccably designed and executed cake for Chinese New Year?

The massive cake was done in shades of red and gold, with numerous whimsical decorations and the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac on it. Golden coins, golden good luck charms, and a golden sheep (this year’s animal sign) topped the cake. The very impressive cake was very detailed, with finely made ropes of fondant and equally draped red fondant covering the entire confection. With the many details of the cake, it was then no wonder that it won!

Congratulations to Chef Jed for such a coup! And Kudos as well to Chef Alex and team Baketech for a job well done! Truly a masterpiece to behold, and truly deserving of the top honors for the Chinese New Year Themed Cake Display Competition at the recently concluded 2015 FCBAI Bakery Fair.

BRIEF HISTORY OF BAKING

303

Have you ever wondered where that bread you are eating first came to be? Or where your favorite cookies originated? How about that cake that you had on your birthday? Ever wonder where baking first began and how it came to be?

Baking is said to have been around for ages, and was said to have been a cooking method since 4000BC. Some of the earliest civilizations to use baking as a cooking medium included the Egyptians, who are credited with creating the grinding materials that produced flour, as well as the stone ovens and earthenware pots used for baking. The Greeks were said to have invented cakes, and the Romans are said to have been the first to make baking an industry, with the training of bakers and refining of baking skills.

In the US, Native Americans introduced settlers to ground corn, which they then used to create what was then called “Johnny Cakes”. This is a type of cornbread that was made with cornmeal, water and salt. Present day versions of this flat, unleavened corn bread have milk in them and are called by a few different names. The settlers then started planting wheat in the fields, and the rest, they say, is history.

Improvements in baking methods and techniques, like the use of baking powder as a leavening agent, and yeast as a must for creating bread, came in the mid to late 1800s. In the early 1900s, the creation of equipment that made baking easier, like the mechanical mixers revolutionized baking and made it faster for bakers to create their breads and pastries. This was when baking became a huge commercial industry.
